இரண்டு துறவிகள் ஒன்றாகப் பயணம் செய்து கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். அவர்களில் ஒருவர் துறவியாக இருந்தாலும் அவசரத் தேவைகளுக்கு கொஞ்சம் பணம் வைத்திருக்க வேண்டும் என்ற கொள்கை உடையவர். மற்றொருவரோ " முற்றும் துறந்தவர்களுக்கு எதுவுமே தேவையில்லை. அவர்கள் தேவை அறிந்து இறைவன் உதவுவார். " என்ற எண்ணம் கொண்டவர். வழியில் ஆறு ஒன்று குறுக்கிட்டது. அதைக் கடந்தால்தான் அவர்கள் மேலும் பயணம் செய்ய முடியும். ஆற்றங்கரையில் படகோட்டி படகுடன் நின்றிருந்தான்.
பணமில்லாத துறவி " படகுக் காரனுக்குத் தர நம்மிடம் பணம் இல்லை. இரவை இங்கேயே கழிப்போம். பொழுது விடிந்ததும் யாராவது இங்கு வந்தால் நமக்கு உதவி கிடைக்கும் நாம் அக்கரை போவோம்" என்றார்.
அதற்கு மற்றொருவர் " இங்கு இரவில் தங்குவது ஆபத்து. என்னிடம் பணம் உள்ளது. வாருங்கள் போவோம்" எனக் கூட்டிச் சென்றார். மறுகரையை அடைந்ததும் பணம் வைத்திருந்த துறவி " துறவியாக இருந்தாலும் நாம் சிறிதளவு பணம் வைத்திருக்க வேண்டும் என்னிடம் பணம் இருந்ததால் தானே இங்கு வர முடிந்தது. உங்களைப் போன்று நானும் இருந்திருந்தால் நம் நிலைமை என்ன? சிந்தித்துப் பாருங்கள் என் வழி தான் சிறந்த வழி" என்றார்.
அதற்கு பணம் இல்லாதவர் " நீங்கள் சொன்னது உண்மைதான், என் நிலைமையை நினைத்துப் பாருங்கள் பணம் இல்லாமலேயே நான் இங்கு வந்து விட்டேன் இறைவன் உங்கள் வழியாக எனக்கு உதவி செய்துள்ளார். என் எண்ணத்தை மாற்றிக் கொள்ள வேண்டிய தேவை இல்லை" என உறுதியுடன் சொன்னார்.
